2024 QS World University Subject Rankings: All Subjects of Singapore Management University Enter Top 50

On April 10th, the international higher education research institution QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the 14th edition of the QS World University Subject Rankings.

The 2024 QS World University Subject Rankings independently compare and analyze over 16,400 individual university courses from more than 1,500 universities in 95 countries and regions worldwide, covering 55 subjects and divided into five categories: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.

QS uses five key indicators for ranking, including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, H-index, and international research network. The exact weights of each indicator vary by discipline to reflect the differences between different subjects.

Global Ranking Highlights:

American universities lead in 32 subject areas. Harvard University is the top-performing university, ranking first in 19 subjects. Following closely is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), leading in 11 subjects.

British universities rank first in 16 subjects. Oxford University tops four subjects, followed by Cambridge University, University College London (UCL), the Royal College of Art, and the Royal College of Music, each ranking first in two subjects.

Mainland China ranks third globally, with Chinese mainland universities ranking in the top 10 in eight subjects. Tsinghua University achieved the highest ranking in China in three subjects, including an excellent performance in Art History (5th globally).

Performance of Chinese Universities:

In this ranking, Chinese mainland has a total of 882 projects from 101 universities listed in 54 subjects, second only to the United States and the United Kingdom.

Chinese mainland universities stand out for their academic breadth.

In Asia, Chinese mainland ranks second in the Top 10 (with 8 projects in the Top 10, compared to Singapore’s leading 29 projects), and 33 projects enter the Top 20.

In addition, Chinese mainland has 123 projects entering the Top 100 and 256 projects entering the Top 200, leading the way.

Singapore Perspective:

National University of Singapore (NUS) ranks second in Art History, only behind the Royal College of Art in the UK.

Singaporean universities perform well in other subjects, with NUS and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) having 19 and 10 subjects respectively ranking in the top ten.

103 subjects from five universities in Singapore participated in the ranking, with more than half of the subjects improving their rankings. 20% of the subjects maintained their previous rankings, while more than 10% of the subjects saw a decline in rankings.

Among Singaporean universities, NUS has the most subjects ranking in the top ten, with as many as 19 subjects. NTU has ten subjects ranking in the top ten.

Apart from NUS and NTU, Singapore Management University is the only local university with all subjects ranking in the top 50, with its Business and Management Research subject ranking 44th.

The top-ranking subjects in Singaporean universities are Computer Science and Arts and Design.

Singapore has 51 subjects entering the TOP 20.
